Asipim Chair, Ashanti Ethnic Group, Ghana, Africa
This antique wooden chair, with its sloping back, is inspired by European armchair designs of the 17th and 18th centuries.
It is richly decorated with upholstery tacks and hammered metal plates. At the top of the backrest, on the front, is a large hammered bird within a tondo; on the back, a hammered elephant, its silhouette rendered with punches. The crossbar is adorned on the back with geometric patterns, featuring two stylized figures in the center.
The seat is woven.
The use of this chair was reserved for the most important men in the Ashanti villages of Ghana.
It shows signs of wear, with the cabochons missing, some upholstery tacks missing, and some corner losses to the weaving.
Ghana, late 19th century.
