Lime Spatula, Massim Area, Papua New Guinea
This carved and blackened wooden spatula was used to scoop up lime, which was mixed with areca nuts and betel leaves when preparing a stimulating betel quid.
Our example features a hinged handle, hollowed out and split so that it produces a loud click when struck against the hand and its two parts clash together. In the Trobriand Islands, this device allowed chiefs to announce their arrival. In other regions of the Massim area, it could also be used as a small percussion instrument during songs or ceremonies.
