Sailor's Truncheon, 19th Century

This bosco's baton is made of twisted whalebone, with two lead-weighted ends covered with a seamanship braid. The bosco, or boatswain, was the non-commissioned officer responsible for supervising the sailors, carrying out maneuvers and maintaining discipline on board.
This type of object was used in the military and merchant navies as an instrument of authority.
This example most probably dates from the 19th century.
It is preserved in good overall condition, with some wear and tear and a break on a dewlap element.
