"Seal – Stamp – Sculpture, Gilded Bronze – Bust Of Joan Of Arc Wearing A Helmet – Signed Becker"
Late 19th century France Gilt bronze office seal depicting Joan of Arc, national heroine and emblematic figure of the French resistance. The bust, helmeted and dressed in armor adorned with her coat of arms, reflects both the piety and determination of the "Maid of Orléans". A symbol of courage and loyalty, Joan of Arc embodies the union of faith and homeland. Rediscovered and exalted by Romanticism, Joan of Arc experienced a true iconographic triumph in the 19th century. After the war of 1870, she became a central figure of French patriotism, associated with national unity and resistance against the invader. The Third Republic and then the Church accentuated this cult, which culminated with her beatification in 1909 and her canonization in 1920. This seal is part of this context of rediscovery and celebration of the great figures of national history. The matrix, engraved with a monogram, underlines the personal and utilitarian dimension of the object, while the base bears the Becker signature, a guarantee of a recognized foundry work from the second half of the 19th century. An object that is both functional and commemorative, this stamp illustrates the intimate association between art, memory and patriotism in the production of prestigious objects of the Belle Époque.
