Object description :

"Museum - Pair Of Carved Monoxyl Wood Candlesticks - Folk Art - Mirror Inlays"
Mid-19th century – Massif Central? France Rare pair of fruitwood candlesticks, carved from a single piece, adorned with mercury mirrors set on their square stems and decorated with geometric friezes and wolf tooth motifs. Each side is fitted with a mirror, reflecting the fragile light of the flame and multiplying its brilliance in the dim light of mountain interiors. These candlesticks, with their massive bases and rustic shapes, still bear traces of ancient polychromy. They bear witness to a harsh and austere life, where the candle, the only source of light, was preciously amplified by these mirrors. These objects embodied popular ingenuity, allowing people to prolong evenings, work, or simply survive the long winter nights. The presence of the rare and delicate mercury mirrors adds an almost intimate dimension: they captured and reflected the faces of the peasants, their daily gestures, their tired or pensive gazes. Each shard reflected a fragment of silent life, etching a fragile and ephemeral light into domestic memory. Utilitarian objects yet charged with poetry, they stand today as witnesses to a sober and profoundly human existence. Condition: consistent wear, losses and traces of use, mirrors altered by time. Dimensions: height 32 cm ALL DELIVERIES ARE MADE BY DHL EXPRESS ONLY.
