Period: 1st century BC Origin: Necropolis of La Catalane, Les Baux-de-Provence (Southern Gaul) Provenance: Brunet Collection (no. 53), previously acquired before 1973 Small ewer in modeled indigenous ceramic, complete, discovered in the funerary furniture of the protohistoric necropolis of La Catalane. With its trilobed mouth and handle decorated with pastilles, this rare piece illustrates the local pottery know-how and the funerary traditions of the end of the Iron Age in Provence. Description: • Material: reddish-brown clay. • Shape: small ewer with trilobed neck, rounded body, one handle decorated with four applied pastilles. • Decoration: sober, limited to the functional ornamentation of the handle. • Technique: shaping by modeling; smoothed internal surface; polished reddish-brown external surface. Use: Probably intended to contain liquids during funeral rites, the ewer accompanies the deceased in his burial, recalling the symbolic role of water and wine in ritual practices. Comparable examples have been unearthed in the necropolises of Cavaillon and Saint-Rémy, confirming a specific regional typology. Condition: complete, stable surface with wear consistent with time.
