Museum – Messenger Box – Gothic Casket With Riveted Fittings – France – Early Period
Late 15th Century France Late Middle Ages – Late Gothic Rare safe, known as a messenger's box, made of wood covered in leather and bound with wrought iron, a striking example of medieval art in its most essential function: to protect, contain, and transmit. Conceived as a veritable miniature fortress, this box with its domed lid combines the precision of the blacksmith and the sensitivity of the carpenter in an architecture of metal, leather, and wood, designed to withstand both time and covetousness. The body, fashioned from dense wood and reinforced with riveted bands of wrought iron, adopts an arched profile characteristic of Late Gothic. Each riveted fitting with a domed head follows a functional design reminiscent of the arches and ribs of medieval timber frames. The front lock, now incomplete, originally operated a mortise bolt system—a common feature in safes of the late 15th century. The interior, lined with its original textile, bears witness to careful use: this fabric, probably linen, served to protect precious objects, sealed letters, or travel documents. It lends the piece an intimate dimension, a blend of function and precaution. This type of portable yet sturdy casket was intended for civilian use—merchant, notary, or itinerant—rather than liturgical purposes. Its closed structure, weight, and formal austerity embody the medieval symbolism of the protective chest: an object of trust, secrecy, and permanence.
