Miniature - Calvary Figures - Virgin Mary And Saint John - Polychrome- Religious Sculpture
Second half of the XVIIIᵉ century
Northern Italy
Pair of carved and polychrome wooden figures representing the Virgin and Saint John, from a Calvary set.
These two pendant figures are part of a firmly established iconographic tradition. Saint John is depicted with a slight movement of the body, his hand raised to his chest, in an attitude of restraint and abandonment. The Virgin, opposite, stands in deep contemplation, hands clasped, head bowed.
The modeling is direct, without overload. The faces, with their elongated, calm features, do not seek effect but impose a silent presence. The drapery, ample and continuous, structures the figure with simplicity and efficiency.
The sculpture is made of wood. The old fastening systems preserved on the back are a reminder of their original integration into a larger whole. The polychromy, built around contrasts of red and green, affirms the volumes without dispersion. Deprived of their central element, these figures do not lose their force. They continue to function on their own, in a discreet tension between presence and withdrawal.
