"Artifact – Antiquity – Globular Amphorisk With Two Handles – Wheel-turned Ceramic – Archaeology"
Period: 3rd – 2nd century BC Origin: Eastern Mediterranean, probably Hellenistic context Provenance: former private collection, South of France, acquired before 1970 Complete, globular-shaped, wheel-thrown ceramic amphora, representative of small-scale production in the Eastern Mediterranean during the Hellenistic period. This type of vessel, often used as a container for perfumed oils or precious liquids, is frequently found in funerary deposits and ritual domestic contexts. Description: • Material: light beige clay with partially preserved red slip. • Shape: globular body, short, narrow neck, rim with everted lip. • Handles: two vertical ribbon handles, attached from the neck to the shoulder. • Decoration: originally coated surface, now altered, with visible remains of red. • Technique: regular throwing, flat base, traces of wear consistent with long burial. Use: These miniature amphorae were used to contain perfumed oils, precious liquids or to be placed as funerary offerings. Their presence in graves reflects a symbolic as well as a practical value, inscribed in the Mediterranean tradition of gestures of memory and protection of the deceased. Condition: preserved in its entirety, worn surface with traces of deposits and ancient archaeological patina. Visible remains of red slip, small soil concretions. Dimensions: • Height: 12 cm ALL DELIVERIES ARE MADE BY DHL EXPRESS ONLY.
