"Seal - Stamp - Sculpture, Silvered Bronze - Vercingetorix Warrior With Shield "
Late 19th century France Silver-plated bronze office seal depicting Vercingetorix, the emblematic Gallic leader of the resistance against Julius Caesar in 52 BC. A hero of Antiquity, he embodies courage, honor, and loyalty to his homeland, qualities that made him a founding figure in national history. Rediscovered and celebrated in the 19th century, Vercingetorix became a true patriotic icon after the war of 1870. The Third Republic seized on him as a symbol of unity and resistance, giving rise to numerous representations in the arts, from monumental statuary (Aimé Millet in Alésia, Bartholdi in Clermont-Ferrand) to prestigious collector's items. This seal perfectly illustrates this vogue: represented full-length, Vercingetorix is dressed in scale armor and a cloak, his sword in hand, wearing the winged helmet romantically reinterpreted in the 19th century. His shield, worn on his back, is decorated with a bearded head in relief, a heroic and allegorical motif that reinforces the solemn character of the piece. The matrix of the seal is engraved with an interlaced monogram, a sign of a special commission. A rare feature: the seal is removable, the handle and the pedestal can be separated by a screw system. This removable assembly underlines the quality of execution and the ingenuity of the design of the object. Condition: good general condition, old patina, slight surface wear.
