"Seal - Stamp - Sculpture, Gilded Bronze - Bust Of Vercingetorix In Its Case - Signed "
Late 19th century France Gilt bronze office seal depicting Vercingetorix, the Gallic leader who distinguished himself during the revolt against Julius Caesar in 52 BC. A heroic figure of Antiquity, he embodies the resistance of the Gallic peoples against the Roman invader. His surrender at Alesia, although tragic, made him a symbol of courage and loyalty to his homeland. Forgotten for centuries, Vercingetorix was rediscovered in the 19th century and became a true national icon after the war of 1870. The Third Republic established him as a founding hero, celebrated by large statues (Bartholdi in Clermont-Ferrand, Aimé Millet in Alesia), but also by prestigious objects intended for patriotic elites. This seal fits into this context: the vigorously treated bust shows a haughty face, a full mustache and beard, wearing a Gallic helmet. The seal's matrix is engraved with an interlaced monogram, probably commissioned for a private individual, and the base bears the signature L. Tricard, a guarantee of a quality bronzier. Presented in its original red morocco case trimmed with velvet and satin, this seal combines utilitarian refinement and symbolic value. It testifies to the Belle Époque's enthusiasm for the great heroic figures of national history, and the intimate association between art, erudition and patriotism. Condition: good general condition, minor wear to the gilding and slight losses to the polychromy of the helmet. Dimensions: Height 8 cm Delivery: all deliveries are handled by DHL Express only.
