In the foreground, in front of a forge, we see three men shoeing a bull, and a woman breastfeeding a child.
In the medium shot, figures on a balcony, well lit. We can also see a tree in bloom. In the background, here are other buildings, including a church bell tower.
The realistic scene is teeming with details. The lighting effects are particularly well worked: almost dark in the foreground, the scene is bathed in a golden light at balcony level.
The artist signed and dated his work on the arm of a cart. The work is in very good condition, without restoration, clean. The canvas is slightly loose. It is offered in a modern gilded frame, in the old style.
The artist
Giuseppe Visone, originally from Naples, was a painter active in the 19th century, whose birth is estimated around 1800 and whose death is attested after 1851. He participated in the Paris Salon between 1835 and 1846, which allowed him to acquire a certain international renown.
His works also found favor in the eyes of the Court: Queen Maria Amalia acquired several of his paintings.
Visone belongs to the tradition of the Neapolitan school of landscape painting, close to the "Scuola di Posillipo", where picturesque views bathed in Mediterranean light predominate. However, he is distinguished by a pronounced attention to architecture and daily life, often offering lively scenes where humans and buildings interact intimately. The work we present here is a perfect example.
The Louvre Museum and the Carnavalet Museum (Paris) each own a work by Visone.
