The framing of the scene is original: in the foreground stands a large dry thistle that occupies the right third of the painting. In the background on the left, we see a hamlet of houses with roofs covered with tiles and not slate, as one might have expected from Deyrolle who was primarily a Breton painter. But the artist also painted elsewhere... and tiles can be found in Brittany in certain villages of Trégor (Côtes d'Armor).
Mauve-tinted clouds run across the blue sky, which suggests that the scene was captured at dusk.
The work is in very good condition. There is a small, old repair, visible at the back, at the top right of the painting. The work has been placed in a beautiful 19th-century style cerused bis frame, also in very good condition.
The artist
Théophile Deyrolle (1844-1923) was a French painter mainly known for his Breton landscapes and genre scenes.Born in Paris into a family of artists - his father was a taxidermist and naturalist - Deyrolle initially trained in the studio of Félix Barrias and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He quickly developed a personal style marked by realism tinged with Impressionist influences.
His career took a decisive turn when he discovered Brittany in the 1870s. Seduced by the wild beauty of the Breton landscapes and the authenticity of rural life, he settled in Concarneau, which became his artistic home base. The city was then a dynamic artistic center, attracting many French and foreign painters. Deyrolle excelled in the representation of the Breton coasts, fishing villages and scenes of Breton daily life. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français from the 1870s and received several awards. His works met with notable commercial success, particularly among a bourgeois clientele seduced by his picturesque representations of Brittany.
Deyrolle died in 1923, leaving behind a significant body of work that bears witness to Brittany in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His paintings are now found in several Breton museums and private collections.
