This vibrant work by Gérard Fagard captures the festive and luminous atmosphere of a popular celebration in Sanary-sur-Mer. The painter brilliantly conveys the Mediterranean effervescence through a scene of brass bands, where musicians and spectators mingle in joyful animation.

The composition is organized around a dense crowd gathered on the port, beneath the palm trees characteristic of the Var coastline. In the foreground, the spectators watch the musicians, their brass instruments catching the golden reflections of the southern sun. The background reveals the typical architecture of Sanary, with its light-colored facades punctuated by colorful shutters and striped parasols enlivening the café terraces.

The rich and luminous color palette combines deep blues, vibrant yellows, warm oranges, and touches of bright red. Fagard's spontaneous and generous brushstrokes, applied in successive impasto layers, convey the movement and vitality of this popular scene. The figures, rendered in a simplified style, come alive in a colorful dance that evokes both the Fauvist tradition and the spirit of the South of France.

The work is signed in the lower right corner. It is in very good condition. It is presented in a modern setting, also in very good condition.

The artist
Born in 1938 in Canteleu, Normandy, Gérard Fagard trained in painting at the Beaux-Arts in Rouen from 1957, then at those in Toulon, after his family settled in Sanary-sur-Mer in 1959. He interrupted his studies to complete his military service in Algeria, an experience from which he returned deeply marked.

Resuming his training in Rouen, he obtained in 1962 the Certificate of Aptitude for Higher Artistic Training and began a career as a visual arts teacher that took him from Normandy to the Var. Alongside his teaching, his artistic career blossomed in 1968 with his first Parisian exhibition at the Weil Gallery on Avenue Matignon, which led to a group exhibition in New York.

In 1976, having settled permanently in Sanary-sur-Mer, he made Provence his primary source of inspiration. From 1998 onwards, he devoted himself exclusively to painting.

An heir to Fauvism and an admirer of Cézanne, Van Gogh, and Seyssaud, Gérard Fagard developed a vigorous style characterized by a vibrant Mediterranean palette and an expressive touch. His work has been exhibited in numerous galleries in France and Switzerland.

His work is on display at the gallery (07240).
