Nude, oil on canvas signed by Médard MAERTENS (1875-1946) in the lower right border, mounted under a gilded wooden frame. Dimensions: Frame: Subject: Superb and rare Fauvist work by this painter. Médard MAERTENS was a painter, draftsman and graphic artist. Trained at the Academies of Tielt, Roeselare, Antwerp. Produced landscapes, urban landscapes, scenes with figures, figures, nudes, interiors, portraits. First worked for a time as a decorative painter. After a stay in Ostend, he settled in Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe around 1900, where he became friends with the Brabant Fauvists. He often came to the Cercle l'Effort. Experienced the war on the Yser front. During a stay in Paris, he met Marthe Guillain, who would become his wife. He settled with his wife near Paris until 1931, where he met some of the great names in the art world of the time. His studio in Nogent-sur-Marne became a meeting point for Belgian artists in France. He traveled to Turkey in 1929-1930. In the 1920s, he moved from Luminism to a rather heavy Fauvism with strongly emphasized figures and, compared to Rik Wouters or De Kat, a rather dark color palette. Cubism also left many traces in his work. He was a member of the Le Sillon and La Libre Esthétique groups. He worked in the museums of Antwerp and Ixelles, among others.
