Jean Mas, a key figure in the École de Nice, launched his Ombres series in the 1990s as an extension of his work with the École de Nice and the Fluxus movement. The series consists of photographing the shadows of well-known or anonymous people, sometimes plants or objects, then retransposing them in part into volume and also painting them on wood, in a plastic search for the instant. The aim is to capture what, in essence, escapes... to give materiality to the intangible.
Here, the shadow cast is that of his friend Raph Gatti, photographer and archivist of the Nice scene, a friendly and discreet figure for a whole generation of artists.
Raph Gatti (1936-2005), a self-taught photographer from Nice, was one of the great witnesses to the École de Nice, a singular artistic movement that emerged in the 1960s, combining humour, misappropriation, visual poetry, performance and social criticism. He was not a “member” of the movement in the strict sense, but was its photographer and chronicler, capturing the fleeting moments of an aesthetic of the ephemeral.
Jean Mas (1946) was a central figure in the École de Nice, known for his performances, his absurdist and minimalist works, and above all for his ‘Messages à l'Humanité’, his Mas-mouches, and his games with identity and disappearance. His approach is nourished by absurd humour and a critical distancing from art itself.
