A very beautiful and finely composed 17th to 18th century French School old master oil-on-canvas painting depicting the The Baptism of Jesus.

The purification of Jesus with water by John the Baptist was a major event described in the three synoptic Gospels of the New Testament.

This is a beautifully composed painting which follows the earlier renaissance tradition of depicting this iconic religious scene – a scene covered by painters such as Andrea del Verrocchio and Piero della Francesco and often produced by their contemporaries in Spain.

The painting has wonderful rich tonality and has been both restored and re-framed within.

Condition report:

In excellent restored condition the canvas is in good tension and the tonality is strong. There is fine craquelure present commensurate with its antiquity and the paint surface is stable.

The work has been lined approximately 20 years and the restoration likely to have been carried out at the same time. The painting is in fine clean condition has been re-framed in a new quality period style frame.
