Dutch artist Adrianus Johannes Zwart, known as Arie Zwart, was born in Rijswijk (ZH) on August 30, 1903 and died in Laren on August 27, 1981. He studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague during 1918 and 1919 and he was a pupil of Otto Gustav Adolf Kriens (1873-1930) and also Louis Soonius (1883-1956).
Zwart worked as a graphic designer until 1926 when he made the decision to concentrate on painting. Arie was a very versatile painter and draftsman. He painted according to The Hague School in a naturalistic-impressionistic style of landscapes, still lifes and interiors. The Dutch landscapes are often of farms, polder ditches and backyards.
Zwart was a rather itinerant character, travelling throughout the Netherlands, firstly by car capturing in paint the traditional life and landscape he saw there. In 1936 Arie had a houseboat made in which he lived, travelling the waterways of Holland and painting scenes in Zaltbommel, Meppel, and Giethoorn to mention but a few.
After 1949 Zwart travelled to foreign countries such as the South of France and Spain, Portugal and Tunisia. The light of the Mediterranean had a big influence of the artist’s palette which can be particularly seen in his pictures of Ibiza and Mallorca which are full of light and colour.
The extensive oeuvre of Arie Zwart is almost entirely painted in the impressionist style that was developed by the painters of the Hague School. Light and mood play an important role in this. The same applies to his subjects: landscapes, farms, lakes and still lifes. Zwart did not commit himself to a specific region and preferred to travel.
The present work is a landscape scene located in Lage Mierde, North Brabant, Netherlands. In 1933 Zwart moved into a caravan located in Lage Mierde. Then in 1936, he had a houseboat made in which he lived, located in the harbor of Zaltbommel. This helps us date this work do between 1933-1936 during the time that he was living in the Lage Mierde area.
Impressionist in style and atmospheric in character, this painting is typical of Zwart's work. The vibrant scene captures a moment in time, the landscape vividly illuminated and highlighted by the contrast of the light and shadows. Zwart was a master at capturing the optics of a particular place at a particular moment in time.
The composition of this work is particularly effective, what looks like a plowed field on the right and some trees on the left separated by a path that leads to a little house in the distance. Adding to the atmospheric character of this work is the wonderful contrast of the bright blue sky with a few whispy clouds and the greens, browns, and yellows of the landscape below.
