A beautifully composed, mid 18th century oil-on-panel German school painting depicting what we think is probably an English landscape. We believe it is from the studio of
Hendrik Schweickhardt (1747 - 1797) (German) on the basis that whilst most certainly within the circle of the painter, the artist himself spent a significant period living and working in England.
Hendrik Willem Schweickhardt was an 18th-century painter from Germany.H e was born in Hamm and moved to The Hague where he became a pupil of Hieronymus Lapis and started a family. He moved to London in 1786 for economic reasons and did quite well there. His daughter Katharina learned to draw and paint and became a poet; she married Willem Bilderdijk after having an affair with him in 1795 when he taught her and her sisters in London. Schweickhardt died in London.
The work is extremely close to that of the painter and displays a beautiful tonality whilst also conveying a sense of tranquility between the artist and the landscape. Within the landscape are two characters resting on their travel with a pet dog in close attendance. A very beautiful work.
Condition report: We have had the painting cleaned. There were a few, very small areas of retouching required to the peripheral areas, bottom and right hand side, due to historical rubbing onto the frame which appears to be original to the painting. The frame also required restoration and has been sympathetically repaired in several areas. It now looks splendid. There is fairly pronounced craquelure throughout the paint surface, but it is very stable and in our opinion does not deflect in any way from the beauty of the composition.
