A beautiful mid to late 18th century oil on canvas depiction of two playful putti with flowers and butterflies . The painting is of fine quality and close to the style of the important French painter Francois Boucher (1703-1770) who regularly incorporated the theme of putti within his compositions.
François Boucher’s characteristically sumptuous and pastel-hued paintings take on a myriad of subjects, including portraits, mythology, landscapes, and genre paintings.
Among the wide repertoire of thematic style in Boucher's work are his canvases of putti, or plump cherubs, as in L’amour moissonneur, or Cherub Harvesters. Boucher was particularly proud of these paintings. In 1735, the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture exhibited a small display of works by its members, including Boucher.
In 1765, François Boucher was awarded the two highest honours among the French arts establishment—appointed as first painter to the king and head of The Royal Academy. Boucher was one of the most celebrated decorative artists of the 18th century, known for formulating and championing the style of Rococo through revival of the idealised, pastoral landscapes.
Within the composition the left hand putti is likely to be a depiction of Cupid another theme used a few times by Boucher and here we see Cupidon (the Roman god of desire, erotic love, attraction, and affection) with his bow and arrows perhaps taking respite from the function usually associated with the character and taking time to playfully spend time with another putti who is fixated with the flight of a butterfly.
A wonderful theme and skilfully executed the painting is almost pastel – like in its subtle but also distinctive tonality and captures a highly decorative moment with tactility
The painting offers an excellent opportunity to acquire a highly decorative late Rococo period painting within a genre that is always extremely popular with classical art collectors and those looking for a decorative work of art that would in our opinion compliment a number of environments .
