Title: Symbolist Painting of a Nude Bather
Signature: Signed lower left
Provenance: From a Private French collection
Medium: Oil on original canvas
Overall size with its original Montparnesse carved frame is 83cm x 75cm x 5cm and the painting measuring 64cm x 54cm
A superb, large, signed oil-on-canvas by the French Post-Impressionist and Symbolist painter Henri Le Riche. The painting depicts a nude bather by the banks of a river in spring, executed in the symbolist style.
The painting scale and its soft but defined brushwork gives an almost pastel-like quality to the tonality. It is wonderfully atmospheric and highly decorative, as well as being beautifully painted. This large work is unlined on its original canvas and in very good condition.
Le Riche was a pupil of Bouguereau and won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1899. He also studied under Robert-Fleury. In 1888 began exhibiting his artworks at the Salon des Artistes Francais. He exhibited widely and his paintings are held in a number of museums. This is a very beautiful example of his work.
In 1898, Henri Le Riche became a full member of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts and was awarded the chevalier de la Legion d'honneur from the French government. His artwork can also be found in private collections across Europe and his work is very collectible.
The record price for this artist at auction is 2,380 USD for Henri LE RICHE (1868-1944) – Les Pharisiens. Carton. 22 x 27 cm – Le Christ outragé, sold at Artpaugée in 2024.
Condition report: In excellent original condition with no apparent repairs to the paint surface or verso. The canvas is still in good tension. A beautifully toned painting retaining excellent colours. The Montparnasse frame is in lovely condition and we think it is original to the painting.
