Object description :

"Orientalist Portrait Of A Lady, Adolph Weisz (1838 - 1905)"
Adolph Weisz (1838 - 1905)

Title: Orientalist Portrait of a Lady

Medium: Oil on canvas

Period circa 1890-1900

Provenance. From a private French collection and thence from a leading UK art dealer.

Overall size with the frame is 74 cm x 55 cm x 5 cm. The painting itself measures 58 cm x 38 cm

A very beautiful and large, signed post-impressionist style orientalist oil on canvas painting by the Hungarian born painter Adolph Weisz,

Born on 11 May 1838 in Budapest and then moved to France and became a naturalised French citizen.

Weisz was a painter of genre, figures and portraits. He was a pupil of Jalabert and was a member of the Society of French Artists. He was awarded a third class medal in 1875 a second class in 1885 and in 1900 at the Universal Exposition a Bronze Medal

His works have been in the museums of Draguignan, Liseux, and Pontoise and have been auctioned throughout France and the UK

Weisz won numerous medals and awards and painted romantic scenes often with an orientalist theme such as this work.

This painting is in superb original condition and ready to hang.

Similar orientliats works by the artist have sold for in excess of 100,000 GBP. This work is form a private French collection. The painting offered had a similar tonality to "La favorite" which sold at auction in New York in 2005.

Condition report:

In good original condition we think the painting had possibly been cleaned in the past as there are a few areas of possible over-cleaning which in our opinion does not detract from what is a stunning portrait painting. There appears to be no other restoration work on the paint surface and the unlined canvas has no repairs to the verso. The canvas is in good tension and condition given its antiquity.
