Object description :

"Orientalist Portrait Of A Full-length Nude From The 19th Century, Circle Of Fabio Fabbi (1861-1946)"
Circle of Fabio Fabbi (1861-1946)

XIX - Italian Orientalist School

19th Century Italian School Full-Length Orientalist Portrait of a Nude

Period circa 1890-1900

Medium: Oil on canvas

Provenance : From a private UK collection

Overall size with the frame is 97cm x 67cm x 3cm and the painting measured at 87cm x 57cm

A superbly composed late 19th century Italian orientalist school oil on canvas depiction of a beautiful nude which is close to the work of the prolific orientalist - genre painter Fabio Fabbi (Italian, 1861-1946) and we feel may warrant further research to establish an attribution if not to this painter then potentially to another as the work is of very high quality.

The work is very well proportioned and executed with a brilliant eye and skill for capturing both tonality, light, subtle textures and composition balance. The colours are warm and the viewer can almost get a sense of the evening summer warmth portrayed within the shadows as the figure stands evocatively but also perfectly natural in their pose.

The composition almost echoes some of the earlier photographic studies of this theme in the way in which the artist captures their sitter and in the manner she clearly feels confident in "sitting"for the artist. A wonderful study accomplished by a very fine hand.

Fabio Fabbi (1861-1946) was an Italian Neoclassical painter whose extensive and prolific oeuvre dubbed him the 'Last of the Orientalists'. Recently discovered archives have contextualised his contribution to the genre.

Fabbio displayed creative potential at a young age, receiving a number of commendations for his studies in classical sculpture at age 16. Shortly after, he was granted a place at the Academy of Fine Art, Florence, where he studied diligently under the tutelage of master Augusto Rivalta, excelling as a classical sculptor and painter.
