Description:
Émile Eisman-Semenowsky was born in 1859 in Poland. He studied art outside Poland and in the early 1880’s moved to Paris where he became an assistant to the Belgian artist Jan Van Beers (1852-1927). Under Van Beers he started to produce portraits mostly of fashionable women, later specialising in romantic Oriental style portraits aimed at the Parisian middle class. He also painted genre and historical scenes.
Eisman-Semenowsky immigrated to Paris in the 1880s, where he became a well-known portraitist. His impressive oeuvre is dominated by airy and romantic portraits of idealised by often actual women, frequently adorned with flowers and stylish clothing, as is seen in this beautiful example. This blue-eyed beauty, with flowers in her hair and a luxurious fur collar, epitomizes the bourgeois elegance popular in France during his time.
Along with his portraits of women, Eisman-Semenowsky also developed a fascination with the Orientalist influences that were appearing in the work of his contemporaries. Many of his works feature lavish Oriental details, with beautiful women clad in sumptuous and colorful clothing
The painting offered is typical of the artist's ouvre and is a very fine example with lovely tonality and is presented in excellent gallery condition.
The artist's record sale at auction is USD$106,000. The painting being offered is a very good example of the artists work. A stunning portrait.
Émile Eisman-Semenowsky exhibited at the Royal Academy with works entitled 'Spring-Time' and 'After the Dance'. His paintings are highly popular and can be found in private and public art collections.
