Description and condition report:
A very beautiful, signed, early Venetian seascape oil-on-canvas by Albert Duprat depicting a view of Venice at sunset with figures in the foreground and sailing ships with a beautifully atmospheric sunset. The work is beautifully painted and unlined on its original canvas and housed within a stunningly beautiful restored gilt gesso ornate late 19th century frame.
Duprat trained in Venice and painted in the manner of his contemporaries such as Felix Ziem and Adolphe Bachmann. Duprat developed his artistic skills at the École des Beaux-Art in his birth city of Venice. Most of his oeuvre illustartes his love of Italy, and particularly Venice.
The artist consistently depicted his Venetian scene of canals, monuments, and gondolas as inviting and beautifully serene insights into his beloved home city. Duprat was greatly interested in the effects of light on water, and painted in short, colorful brushstrokes to heighten this effect. The painting being offered is very typical of this style.
Duprat 's paintings are almost all views of Venice, canals and monuments, a few seascapes of the lagoon and the Adriatic, and views of the area around the town. However, he also painted views of the banks and bridges of the Seine in Paris, and the canals of Martigues, which is known as 'the Venice of Provence'.
In very good, lightly cleaned, original unlined condition, without any repairs to the verso. The superbly ornate frame is late 19th century and has been professionally restored and is stunning. (See notes below regarding frames).
