"Portrait Of Salome, 18th Century, After Pordenone (italy, 1483/84 - 1539)"
18th Century Italian School Portrait of Salome

After Pordenone (Giovanni Antonio de Sacchis) (Italian, 1483/84 - 1539)

68cm x 55cm x 5.5cm framed and the painting at 59.7cm x 47cm

Oil on canvas

This painting depicts Salome, daughter of Herodias, who is one of the characters in the Biblical story where John the Baptist criticizes Herod for marrying his brother's wife Herodias.

Herod was the ruler of Gallilee who had married his brother's wife Herodias in violation of Hebrew law. When John criticized this action he was thrown into jail. At a birthday party for Herod, Herodias’ daughter Salome danced so well that Herod promised her anything she wished for. At Herodias' suggestion, Salome asked for the head of John. Reluctantly Herod ordered the decapitation and John's head was brought to Salome on a platter.

This episode from the Bible was famously depicted by Titian, but also by Pordenone (Giovanni Antonio de Sacchis) (Italian, 1483/84 – 1539), after whose depiction of the episode this painting has been executed. Pordenone’s painting depicts Salome holding the platter with the head of John the Baptist whereas this painting consists of just the portrait of Salome. It is a very well painted work by the hand of a skilful and technically proficient artist.

Condition report: The painting has been professionally restored within the last 40 years or so with some small areas of retouching and a lining. There is craquelure commensurate with its antiquity. The paint surface is stable and the canvas is in good tension. The frame which maybe original to the painting had been refurbished and is in good condition.
