This engaging painting captures a wonderfully atmospheric Dutch harbour scene with fishing boats by the 19th century Dutch artist Augustus Van Hier. The busy quayside to the right of the painting is balanced by the calm waters that fade out into the distance towards the horizon where the sun shines through a moody haze.
Augustus Van Hier is a highly regarded artist and is well collected. He specialised in atmospheric harbour scenes such as the work being offered. The work is skilfully painted as shown in the rendering of the boats and buildings, while the water and overall atmosphere of the work suggests that the painter had a very good understanding of colour and tone.
From comprehensive research into known works by the artist, our opinion is that the painting being offered is one of the finest that he produced.
Condition report: In good original condition with faint impression of upper stretcher bar (not noticeable hanging at normal viewing distance). Faint craquelure throughout with stable paint surface. The canvas has no obvious repairs or intervention and has historically been protected from the verso with a plywood panel. Ready to hang.
