Jean Desbrosses (French) (1835 - 1906)

Title. A Pastoral Landscape

Medium: Oil on canvas

Period: circa 1880

Provenance: From a private French collection

Overall size with the frame is 52cm x 38cm x 3cm and the painting measured at 45.5cm x 26.2cm

A beautifully composed post-impressionist oil-on-canvas pastoral landscape by the well listed and collected French painter Jean Desbrosses (1835 - 1906). Desbrosses travelled widely within the French countryside often depicting rural scenes of which the one being offered is a fine example.

We are unsure of the location but think it's most likely Normandy where Desbrosses spent a fair amount of his time painting and sketching during his formative years. It is, however, most likely from his later period of creativity wherein there are clear influences from his post-impressionist contemporaries.

The landscape is typical of the artists style, and the use of brushstrokes are both well-defined with subtle impasto and deftness with vibrant use of greens and blue-greys, a favourite colour blending used by the painter in a number of his pastoral compositions. The use of perspective is skillful and draws the viewer into the background whilst keeping an awareness of the wooded copse and building within it. The hint of floral presence suggests late springtime. The painting affords a sense of balance and tranquility, another trademark of Desbrosses work.

Condition report: The painting is in good original condition for the most part with a few small areas of well-blended retouching. The painting has been cleaned and re-lacquered. There are some areas of craquelure commensurate with its age (circa 1880). The paint surface is stable and the canvas remains unlined and in good tension without any repairs to the verso.

The frame is contemporary and in nice presentable condition and is offered as a gift; see notes below regarding frames.

Along with Georges de Lafage-Laujol, he was part of the Pont-de-Vaux circle, led by the painter Antoine Chintreuil. A landscape painter, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1861 and 1906.
