Adoration of the Magi

Date: 17th Century

Measurements: 108 x 97 x 8 framed
88 x 79 painting itself

This painting depicts an episode from the Bible where three wise men, or Magi, visit the newborn Jesus to pay homage to him and present him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. In this depiction, the newborn Christ is being held by an angel, likely the Angel Gabriel, while Mary receives a gift from one of the Magi who kneels in reverence and worship. Other onlookers and worshipers surround the infant while a donkey looks on to the right.

Stylistically, the painting is characteristic of artists from the Genoese School of the 17th Century such as Maestro di Monticelli d'Ongina and Gian Lorenzo Bertolotto. The Genoese school developed early in the 17th century and took influence from Italian artists of the late 16th century as well as the Flemish artists Rubens and Van Dyck who visited the region to study the work of the Italian artists.

The compositional structure and the strong contrast between light and shadow are indicative of the work of the Genoese school artists, as is the lateral compositional flow. This particular painting is beautifully composed and skilfully executed. It has a certain theatricality that along with its size gives it a wonderful presence.

Condition report: The painting has been restored and lined within the last 70 years or so and is in very good condition. There are areas of craquelure commensurate with its antiquity. The paint surface is stable. The later, 18th century hand carved and gesso frame has had refurbishment work as well and presents very nicely.
