Medium: oil on Canvas.
Title: "Le Ramoneur"
Provenance. From a highly reputable UK auction source. We will issue a COA with the painting with the full details of the acquisition source .
A wonderful Portrait of a girl with a white bonnet, relined, held in giltwood and gesso frame.
Measurements: sight 37cm x 45.5cm, overall dimensions including the original gilt frame are 62cm x 69.5cm x 5 cm.
The second photograph published includes a print in reverse of this portrait, the original engraving of which can be found in Rijksmuseum, by Jean Augustin Daiwaille, 1820 - 1838. The sitter in this painting is probably the same model as in this engraving, which is titled "Le Ramoneur". The image was probably taken after Greuze or the studio of the painter. The print is not included in the auction sale and is published by way of illustration of the subject and for comparative purposes to support the statements being made. The painting is also facially very close to the engraving by Francais Voyez (1746-1805), After Jean-Baptiste Greuze, titled "Le Ramoneur", which sold at Christie's New York Lot No. 122 3rd December 2003 alongside another engraving titled "La Servante Congedié ".
Condition report: The original canvas has been lined, most likely within the last 50 years. Restoration was most likely also carried out on the painting at that time. The painting appears to have been cleaned and has some small retouching to the face mostly on the forehead region in two places but quite well matched. The canvas is in good tension and there are no holes or patches. The lining is in good condition. There is craquelure throughout the painting which is commensurate to the painting's antiquity. The frame appears to be most likely original to the painting and is gilt with small areas of restoration. The frame is in good overall structural condition and is offered as a gift as we cannot insure antique frames for shipping.
