A beautifully composed, late 17th to early 18th century Italian School oil on canvas painting depicting the in the manner or school of Carlos Maratta. Very finely painted, the work is superbly decorative and an ideal addition for the collector of early Italian religious-themed paintings. The painting displays lovely tactile tonality and use of light.
The painting depicts Catherine’s vision of her ‘mystic marriage’ with Christ. According to tradition, Saint Catherine converted to Christianity after experiencing a profound vision of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child, who symbolically betrothed her to Jesus in a mystical marriage.
St. Catherine of Alexandria is depicted as a learned and noble figure, representing the pursuit of knowledge and faith. Her historical significance as a martyr and scholar resonates deeply within the context of the Renaissance, where education and enlightenment were highly valued.
The Infant Christ, cradled in St. Catherine’s arms, symbolizes divine love and grace. His presence in the painting emphasizes the theme of spiritual marriage, where the earthly and the divine intersect. While the painting is deeply religious, it also reflects secular themes of love and devotion. This particular subject was popular with the old masters.
Carlo Maratta (1625 - 1713) was an Italian Baroque painter and drawer, active principally in Rome where he was the leading painter in the second half of the 17th century. He was a fresco and canvas painter who painted in a wide range of genres, including history and portrait painting. He is the leading representative of the classicising style in the Italian Late Baroque period.
