52cm x 42cm x 3cm framed

26cm x 15cm sight

Discovered in the midst of a pile of Powell's glass catalogues this's work is likely a cartoon for a design for a stained glass window, of which Ford Madox Brown designed many.

It is a depiction of St John the Baptist as per the inscription at the top of the work. Biblical figures such as St John the Baptist were popular subjects for stained glass windows, most of which were commissioned for church buildings.

Ford Madox Brown (16 April 1821 – 6 October 1893) was a British painter of moral and historical subjects, notable for his distinctively graphic and often Hogarthian version of the Pre-Raphaelite style. He was born in France and brought up in Belgium, receiving a conventional academic art education in various studios and subsequently at the Antwerp Academy.

Brown’s knowledge of painting, both past and contemporary, was considerable; in this respect he was different to most other British painters of the Age.

He settled in London in 1844 and gradually his style changed in favour of a realistic representation of figures and landscape, with the use of clear, strong colours and effects of daylight.

Although Brown’s style is strongly associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and he was friends with its members, he was never an official member himself. As well as being a highly regarded painter, Brown was a book illustrator and a founding partner of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner &Co., for which he designed over a hundred windows.

Condition report: The drawing is overall in good condition for its antiquity. It has been mounted onto card at some stage in its history. There may be the outline of a virtually invisible tiny tear lower left, which is invisible when glazed, as well as a few microscopic indents to the background above the figures head.

There are microscopic blemishes, again invisible when hung and only under close magnification. Any slight age-related darkening is minimal and evenly distributed. There are no indications of any creasing or spot-foxing.

The highlighting and quality of the artistry is very high and the tonality is excellent and well defined with no apparent loss of wash or material depth. The drawing is in original condition without intervention.

The drawing will be shipped with the drawing behind non-reflective glass.
