A beautifully painted 17th oil on canvas painting which has been attributed to Giulio Cesare Procaccini.
Giulio Cesare was an Italian painter and sculptor of the early Baroque era in Milan.
Procaccini's earliest training was as a sculptor, and as a young artist he participated in the decoration of the Duomo in Milan.
Later in between 1597 and 1602 he was engaged on the sculptural decoration of the Milanese church of Santa Maria presso San Celso, executing two marble reliefs of the Visitation and the Birth of the Virgin for the facade. Other sculptural projects included work for the Duomo in Cremona in 1597.
He eventually took to painting after 1600 and after establishing a reputation for painting commissioned works for the regional aristocracy Procaccini established as one of the leading Mannerist artists working in Lombardy in the first quarter of the 17th century.
The painting is in excellent restored condition having undergone restoration and lining in recent years with some retouching works apparent when comparing it to the photographs of the painting as catalogued in 1990. Please refer to the auction catalogue photo's.
