STA", probably for Sancta orSanctus, followed by abbreviations of saints' names. This private devotional crucifix is finely crafted:The crucified Christ is represented with expressiveness and finesse, in a classical posture.
The ends of the cross are carved in a trilobed shape, with miniature religious scenes (Evangelists, Virgin, etc.).The sided base is decorated with a sculpted medallion representing a Virgin in prayer.
The reverse of the cross reveals a unique aspect: 13 circular cavities, each containing a tiny relic protected under glass, some of which are partially identifiable, despite the wear of time.
