A colorful and very dramatic, early to mid 19th century French school oil-on-canvas based on the original painting depicting the battle of the Granicus by the French painter Charles Le Brun.
The Battle of the Granicus, in May 334 BC, was the first of three major battles fought between Alexander the Great of Macedon and the Persian Achaemenid Empire. The battle took place on the road from Abydus to Dascylium, at the crossing of the Granicus in the Troad region, which is now called the Biga River in Turkey. In the battle Alexander defeated the field army of the Persian satraps of Asia Minor, which defended the river crossing.
Émile Jean-Horace Vernet more commonly known as simply Horace Vernet, was a French painter of battles, portraits, and Orientalist subjects. He was born in 1789, the grandson of the painter Joseph Vernet, and the son of the painter Carle Vernet. He proved himself to be a worthy successor to the dynasty despite failing to win the Prix de Rome in 1809, and became the Duke of Orléans’ favourite artist.
Vernet initially moved in Romantic circles in the 1820s, alongside his friend Théodore Géricault, where he developed an easy, appealing style and learned the art of lithography. When his paintings were rejected by the Salon in 1822, he organized a solo exhibition in his own studio which was such a resounding success that it set the seal on his reputation. This marked the beginning of a long official career. As his career progressed his works evolved stylistically from the Romantic verve he shared with Géricault to more considered battle painting.
We acquired this painting as attributed to the renowned French artist Horace Vernet (1789-1863) from a leading and reputable UK fine art dealership on the basis it was attributed to Vernet. However, we are offering it as in the circle of the painter as we are not certain of the basis of the attribution.
Please note: The painting is of a good quality and highly decorative. We are not sure that it is stylistically close enough to Vernet's work to offer with an attribution hence we are offering it as “circle of” and believe at best it could be fairly described as “ascribed to”, but without formal academic attribution.
Condition report: In good unlined condition for its age; the paint surface is stable. There are two tiny repairs to the verso and corresponding small retouching in a couple of places to the front, but well-blended.
We've noted two very slight corner rises to the canvas. They are not noticeable when hung and could be eased out if the painting were lined in the future. They do not, in our opinion, detract from the painting.
There is minimal cracking and the canvas is in reasonably good tension with good tonality to the painting which appears to be virtually in original condition.
The later period frame had been modified to fit the painting and is offered as a gift.
In our opinion the painting is ready to hang.
