Wooden Statue of a Holy Priest, 18th Century
This statue depicts a French clergyman, recognizable by the collar flap worn by the French clergy from the 17th century onward. He wears a surplice over his cassock and a hooded cape. Sculpted in contrapposto, with his right hand on his heart and his left arm held out in front, he looks up to the sky. Crushed beneath his feet, a grimacing demon appears to be struggling. The whole rests on a molded base decorated with plant motifs around a medallion.
Good overall condition. The index finger of the left hand is broken, and the little finger of the right hand has been reattached. The demon has a broken horn, the left arm and left foot are missing, and some elements have been reattached.
