Essex Crystal, Gold, And Sapphire Pill Box, Early 20th Century
This lovely crystal box is decorated with an Essex crystal representing a bouquet of gentians in a terracotta pot on a mother-of-pearl background. The setting is in 14-carat gold marked 585, its pusher is set with a cabochon sapphire.
What is an Essex crystal? It is an intaglio on the flat bottom of a crystal cabochon, which is then painted using the technique of fixed under glass: the touches of detail are painted first, then the nuances and finally the backgrounds.
