Oval Amethyst-colored Molded Glass Box With Polychrome Enamel Decoration, Art Nouveau, Circa 1900
Oval amethyst-colored molded glass box with polychrome enamel decoration, Art Nouveau, circa 1900
An elegant oval-shaped box made of deep eggplant-colored molded glass, resting on four volute-shaped legs. The domed lid and body are entirely adorned with hand-painted polychrome enamel decoration. On the lid, a bird with blue and pink wings stands out amid flowering foliage: blue bells, pink flowers, large white flowers, and soft green leaves accented with fine gold lines. The design continues onto the body. The feet are accented with blue enamel dots.
The gilded brass frame accentuates the opening, with a hinge at the back and a clasp at the front. The contrast between the dark background and the vivid enamels gives the object a striking decorative effect.
