A stunningly beautiful, early-to-mid 17th century, small study of a cherub painted in oil on canvas in the circle of Nicholas Poussin.
Nicolas Poussin was a French artist who was a leading painter of the classical French Baroque style, although he spent most of his working life in Rome.
Much of his work was based on religious and mythological subjects painted for a small group of Italian and French collectors.
He returned to Paris for a brief period to serve as First Painter to the King under Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu.
The painting offered is very close to the painter's work in terms of style, and we think that perhaps it may have been painted as a sketch for use in a larger study or perhaps a fragment from a much larger work which may not longer be in existence. Either way, the painting is beautifully executed.
Condition report: In largely original but professionally cleaned and lined condition. There is fine craquelure throughout on close inspection (magnified images are available in the photos provided). The paint surface is in very stable condition and the canvas is in good tension.
