Pig With A Walking Stick Carrying Its Piglet, Viennese Bronze, Bergmann, Late 19th Century

Artist: Atelier Franz Bergmann (cachet Amphore B)

Unusual and touching cold-painted polychrome Viennese bronze depicting a pig standing upright, leaning on a walking stick and carrying its piglet in its arms.

This is a large model for this type of Viennese bronze, giving the composition a particularly strong presence.

The scene, full of tenderness and humour, is typical of the anthropomorphic animal bronzes produced in Vienna in the late 19th century. The almost human posture of the pig and the attitude of the piglet enhance the narrative and lively character of the composition.

The piece bears the “B” mark inside an amphora from the Franz Xaver Bergmann workshop.

Viennese work, late 19th century.
In used condition.

Marked wear to the cold-painted decoration, with several areas of paint loss, consistent with age and use.
