High-back Baroque Armchair, Walnut And Oak, Flemish / Rhenish Region, Circa 1720–1750

High-Back Baroque Armchair, Walnut and Oak, Flemish / Rhenish Region, circa 1720–1750 Late Baroque · Ball-and-Claw Feet · Anglo-Dutch Style · Solid Walnut

A high-back armchair in dark-stained solid walnut, with slightly curved back, flanking uprights and a richly carved central splat — acanthus, scrollwork, fleur-de-lys, shell motifs and interlaced C-scrolls, of a quality representative of the finest late Baroque production. Shaped cresting rail with central knop. Curved arms with padded elbow rests. Broad seat upholstered in old-rose velvet with gilt nail-head trim. Cabriole legs with ball-and-claw feet — a characteristic motif of the Anglo-Dutch Baroque style, disseminated through the Netherlands and Rhenish workshops from the 1720s. Carved cross-stretcher with central medallion. Front legs previously modified.

The ball-and-claw foot is a significant stylistic marker: introduced in England under Queen Anne and rapidly adopted in the Netherlands and Flanders from 1720–1730, this ornamental detail points to an origin in Flemish, Dutch or Rhenish-Mosan workshops working under British influence — a quality of production represented in the collections of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
