Charles Georges Ferville-Suan (1847–1925)
A pair of ornamental bronze vases with a double patina, brown and gilded. The pear-shaped body, with a brown patina and engraved with motifs of aquatic foliage and water lilies, is flanked by allegorical female figures in gilded bronze: one depicting a winged nymph (or fairy), the other a languid, draped young woman. The flared, fluted neck with a scalloped rim and the circular pedestal base, decorated with waves and scrollwork in the Rocaille style, are in gilded bronze.

Charles Georges Ferville-Suan (1847–1925) was a renowned French sculptor, a pupil of François Jouffroy at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, who exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1872 onwards.

Towards the end of the 19th century, he successfully embraced the Art Nouveau movement, creating numerous works of art, light fittings and decorative vases. His work is characterised by a constant celebration of the female form, often transformed into a mythological creature, a nymph or an allegory of nature. This pair of vases is highly representative of his work, masterfully playing on the contrast between the two patinas (brown for the vase, gold for the relief-carved elements) and on the fluid, asymmetrical lines typical of the Belle Époque.
