A green translucent Bohemian glass powder box with a wavy base, featuring a rich enamelled decoration in matt and glossy gold depicting foliage scrolls, garlands of berries and a central stylised floral rosette.

In the 19th century, Bohemian glassworks excelled in the creation of high-quality coloured glass objects for the bathroom and drawing room, which were exported throughout Europe and were particularly prized in France during the Second Empire. The technique of blown glass with optical ribs (creating those internal undulations that play with the light) is enhanced here by highly precise enamelling with fine gold. The chosen decorative motif, combining naturalism with classical scrollwork, is characteristic of the decorative eclecticism of the Napoleon III era. This type of precious box would have been placed on a lady’s dressing table or used as a display piece to hold sweets or powder.
