Bohemian Overlay Crystal Ewer For The Ottoman Market, Circa 1860–1890

A ewer with a multi-lobed pear-shaped body and a fluted truncated conical neck with a gilded multi-lobed collar, fitted with a handle in translucent crystal. Double-overlay Bohemian crystal (or tripled glass: transparent crystal overlaid with white opaline and cobalt blue crystal), featuring cut-out work and hollow ribs, with rich hand-painted decoration enhanced by gilding and polychrome enamels depicting bouquets of flowers, rocaille scrolls and gilded latticework.
Bohemia (for the Ottoman/Middle Eastern market). Second Empire – late 19th century (c. 1860–1890).
H_25 cm.
In perfect condition.

In the 19th century, Bohemian crystal works were at the height of their artistry in the technique of double and triple overlay. Pieces intended for the Ottoman market are distinguished by their generous forms, often inspired by traditional ablution vessels or oriental goldsmithing, and by the sumptuousness of their polychrome designs combining cobalt blue, opaline white and gold.

Our Bohemian crystal ewer with a double overlay, which forms part of the illustrious tradition of ceremonial glassware produced for the Ottoman Empire, bears witness to the virtuosity of the master glassmakers in the cutting of the reserved areas and the delicacy of the enamelled decorations.
