In Buddhist tradition, the ‘touching the earth’ mudra (bhumisparsha mudra) evokes the decisive moment of Shakyamuni’s Enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree, when he called upon the Earth to bear witness to his past virtues in order to overcome Mara’s temptations.
