Beautiful luminous work by the Avignon painter Joseph Hurard which represents a family of gypsies in a caravan on a path by the sea, certainly in the vicinity of Martigues. The artist used a brightly colored palette and played on contrasts.

A pupil of Pierre Grivolas and Charles Vionnet in Avignon, Joseph Hurard exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants from 1908 to 1914 many landscapes, notably of Avignon and Villeneuve-les-Avignon. He joined the Group of Thirteen founded by Clément Brun.
After the First World War, he exhibited in galleries in Marseille. In 1932, he settled in Martigues. site he has been painting since 1913.

Dimensions: 50 x 73 cm without its frame and 61 x 84 cm with its original, formerly resized wooden frame.
