"Beach on the Rive in Martigues"
Oil on canvas,
Signed and located lower right: "Plage de la Rive - Martigues",
Old collector's stamp on back on stretcher with mention of "Claude",
Beautiful, luminous work by painter Charles Malfroy depicting a lively view of the Rive aux Martigues beach. The painter used a warm color palette that perfectly captures the light and colors of a summer day in Provence.
Our work can be compared with a composition by painter Julien Gagliardini, who also immortalized this corner of the quay in Martigues where mussels are sorted, and with another work by painter Charles Malfroy, currently on sale in galleries.
A native of Lyon, Charles Malfroy set up his painting studio in Martigues, known as the "Venice of Provence".
He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français in 1891 and 1894. His submissions of cheerful Mediterranean landscapes to the regional exhibitions won awards from the jury and were much appreciated by collectors.
The artist produced views of small Mediterranean ports: Martigues, Cassis, Les Lecques, Bandol ..
His son Henry Malfroy, also a painter, took over his studio in Martigues.
Nb: Old minor restoration, without incidence, is visible on the backs.
