"Engraved Iron Oval Box, Russia? Early 18th Century: St Petersburg?"
Solid steel pocket box, oval in shape, it opens with a domed cover decorated with hand tool engraving, inside, a thick forged spring, push button latch outside. Border of the box is threaded, bottom plain. It could be a snuff snuff box, or a fire box, for tinder or rifle caps, nothing is certain.
Not sure either the origin of the landscape engraved on the cover, but, according to my research, it looks like the Peter and Paul fortress seen from the Neva, at the beginning of its construction, circa 1720, with its stilts, its stone walls, its balustrade and, more far, what will become the famous bell tower of 100m high .... It is only a probability, of course, I am not an expert.
