A Pair Of Shibayama Sculptures, Japan, Meiji Era, 19th Century.

A pair of large sculptures made using the Shibayama technique. It is a sculptural art in which the artist combines different materials, in this case wood, bone and mother-of-pearl. The precious materials are used as appliques on the carved surface of the wood. They can serve as purely decorative objects or as vases or containers for storing calligraphy brushes - the shape of these containers is unique to them. The Shibayama technique was initiated in 1772-1781 by Onoki Senzo, whose hometown Shibayama became the name of the technique invented by the Japanese artist. Japan, Meiji era (1868-1912). Height 48.5 cm, diameter 17.5 and 18 cm. The condition is visible in the photos, with slight loss of the ivory and mother-of-pearl applications. Free delivery in EU! I send packages by insured mail.
