Pair Of Totai Shippo Vases, Japan, Meiji Period (1868-1912).
A pair of vases made using the Totai Shippo technique, a variant of the cloisonné technique. In this case, cellular glaze covers a ceramic vessel. The heart/leaf medallions depict swallows (or other seabirds) circling above stylized, frothy waves. On the other side are scenes of cherry blossoms (sakura) and the characteristic Mitsudomoe symbol (three swirling tears) inscribed in a flaming shield, a motif frequently found in Japanese heraldry and temple iconography (e.g. on taiko drums). The empty spaces are filled with a dense floral and geometric motif.
